"Preaching and shewing the glad tidings
of the kingdom of God" Luke 8:1.
Many years ago I ran track. I took third place in the state. My quickness also made it possible for me to catch the most precious woman in all the world whom outside of Jesus Christ has been my very best friend and my greatest joy for the past twenty years. But now, I move slower. There are “creaks” and “cracks” when I move that I never use to have. When I get up out of a chair I make that old “grunting” sound. If we are out walking my wife has to “wait for me to catch up.” But hand in hand we do continue to “run with patience the race that is set before us” Hebrews 12:1.
At the beginning of each day, we should thank God for giving us another opportunity not only to enjoy life but also to serve Him. Then ask Him to help us make the most of whatever time He gives us. None of us are guaranteed another day, another hour, or even another breath. Every cemetery that we drive by serves as another reminder that some day this life will end. Will our family and friends only remember us because we were a good person - or will they also remember us because we loved God and wanted them to love Him as well? Without argument God fully expects us to take care of ourselves. The Bible says that our body is the temple of God. It says also that "Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come" (1 Timothy 4:8). We must not place so great of an emphasis on physical well-being and be so obsessed with our bodies that it blinds us to the far more important issue of our moral and spiritual health. Some day, this life will end -- no matter how carefully we take care of our bodies. Some of us, whether it be due to simply growing older, or physical ailments and conditions, are simply not able to do the things we were once able to and God knows our limitations, He knows we can’t do everything we once did. But we can ask Him to show us what we can do, and then make ourselves available to Him to do it. And of course no matter how small our strength may be we can always avail ourselves to the greatest force this side of Heaven - the power of Prayer!
